talk_moves
Definition

Talk moves are sentence frames we supply to students that help them express ideas and interact with one another in respectful, academically appropriate ways

History

There are many different variations when wanting to use talk moves. You can re-voice, repeat, agree/disagree, “say more”, example or counterexample, “why do you think that?” and wait time.

Why Use

You should use talk moves because it is a way for students to support and be respectful towards one another. It builds language and presenting skills by having to speak in front of the class and amongst classmates. It starts a class discussion amongst the students, not just having teacher student conversation.

Criticism

A criticism of talk moves could be that if the students do not participate or are willing to speak, then it will be a teacher led discussion instead of the students. The whole point is so that the students speak amongst each other.
