Summary

An adolescent girl, Charity, in a small town experiences love and romance for the first time. She has been isolated from the world for all her life, and the first time she meets someone new she falls in love with him. She begins an illicit affair that leaves her at odds with her foster father figure and an outcast from most of the town. She becomes pregnant and must face her past in order to embrace a future for herself and her child.

Analyze Author Craft

The story is fiction, but it is written in such a way that it could have been based off of real events. The conflicts are realistic, the characters are people that the readers can relate to, and the solutions make sense in the real world. Even though the people themselves are fictitious, the story is one that many individuals can relate to or have something similar happen to them. The issues in this novel deal with some very relevant issues such as sex, abortion, marriage and poverty. All of these issues were as relevant when the book was written as they are today.

Favorite Part

My favorite part of this story is when Charity goes with her boyfriend to visit the big city of Nettleton.
