Definition

Extensive and explicit rich vocabulary instruction improves the reading abiligy of second language learners exposed to English language in schools.

What does the Research Say

The effects of vocabulary interventions for ELL is strong. This means a focus on rich instruction consistently shows gains in studies when compared to lessons where ELL students did not get explicit vocabulary instruction.

We know students need multiple exposure of words over several days and across reading, writing, and speaking opportunities. Providing rich, intensive vocabulary instruction using “student-friendly” definitions will improve learning. ELL students also need additional activities or supports that engages students in the meaningful use of the words in a a variety of meaning.

Students also benefit when we provide tools that allow for regular reviewing of words such as glossaries or word banks.

Utilize bilingual education as the use of words across contexts increases the linkages to concepts and organizations of ideas.

In the Classroom

Develop explicit lists of words to teach. Focus not only on the vocabulary of the concept but all the language needed to understand the task. Analyze the language demands of the assignements and pre-teach these key words too.
